Broga: Yoga for Bros by Bros

with Paul, Michael, and Stevie

With its founder Michael Lanzano, Stevie WF, Dominick Schiavone and Paul Manza

A men's only retreat

How does yoga can suit the American man, without apology for, or the pressure to be, what

we are and what we are not? In order to change the American social, personal, and political landscape, we must re-imagine the American male. This weekend will definitely include yoga, and might also include shooting guns, lumbering, sleeping outside, knot tying, cooking together, crying, feeling, chanting, hugging, talking it out, and serious inversions. We will offer ancient and modern tools to move beyond the societal constraints toward enhancement and freedom.

We will examine our strengths, vulnerability, (in)flexibility, in order to create and foster a yoga practice that allows us to be who we are without pressure or apology. We will come together as men to delve into our own selves with honesty, humility, and bravery, to re-imagine what it means to be an American male and move beyond societal expectations.

Society prescribes what it is to be a man, oftentimes confounding what we permit ourselves to become. We feel this in our bodies and sense this in our thoughts. At times, our spirits are conscious of a tension. Let this be a weekend of deeply exploring who we are as men, and practicing deeply what kind of men we want to be. Let freedom be our guideline. Let us support our brothers in their journeys without expectations. No rules, aside from the urgency to be present, ought to shape us. Through the practice of yoga, we will stretch beyond our perceived limitations and be creative with our masculinity.

Yoga with Hannah Harpole (who has just come back from India, and has lots of stories to share!). We will explore yoga poses that are specific for women, as well as techniques for regulating one's menstrual cycle with the moon. Yarn with Christine Brandt. Knitters and crocheters of all levels are welcome on this ladies only retreat! Beginners will learn the basics of knitting and crocheting. From casting on, knit, purl, binding off, all the way to finishing your own piece for the winter. More advanced knitters will learn to read patterns or work on their own individual pieces.

FonLin will cook meals that based on Ayurvedic and Chinese traditions that focus on ladie's needs.

Hannah Harpole isinterested in how the physical act of creating space between the joints, muscle, tendons, ligaments, cells, blood of our bodies results in space within our thinking. She has also had extensive experience in women's health. Her classes are physical rigorous, and she is equally dedicated to the Ashtanga and B.K.S Iyengar lineage. Hannah recently traveled in India where she was honored to study in Mysore with Sharat, Rishikesh with Usha, and Dharamkot at the Himalayan Iyengar Institute. She was also was taught traditional Tibetan Meditation by, Sonam, a Monk of the Dalai Lamas family.Hannah also creates performances, films, and cooks vegetarian food.

Christine is an avid crochet and knitter. She can pretty much crochet or knit anything. Some advice on buying yarn and needles: For first time knitters, a good place to start is with a thick, chunky yarn, it will be easier to learn on. Find something that you will be excited to work with, that feels good to the touch that's in a color that you like. Get a pair of big needles, size 10 or larger. If yarn stores make you nervous, no worries, needles and yarn will be provided!

Get ready for the first ever yoga HOEDOWN y'all!!!!

Labor Day Weekend - September 2nd-5th, 2011

3 days in the Berkshire Mountains, live music of all kinds, yoga, some home cookin, a magical swimming pond, campfires, about a million stars......
...
If you've never been on a "yoga retreat" or already have and just love it so, this is the place to be Labor Day Weekend. It's half yoga retreat, half live music festival, all heart and joy. The idea is to bring together a wider community of folks (including your friends that don't "do" yoga) for a weekend of good old fashioned end of summer fun. Many of the faces you already know and love will be there sharing their talents...and there will be plenty more to meet!

It's all taking place on the top of a mountain at the beautiful Abode Mountain Camp. There's a huge outdoor circus tent for the yoga classes and where musicians will play throughout the day and night. Tons of space to wander, hike and move. Plenty of time to play, rest and rejoice. The main accommodations are your tent and a limited number of private and shared cabins. Outdoor showers and actual bathrooms! And if you're not the "roughin" it type, there are also lovely B&B style accommodations just down the mountain. All your meals will be provided (vegetarian style) either way.

Are you getting excited yet? Well, check this out....

There will be multiple yoga classes of all levels every day, and here's the list of teachers!

Lady Ruth Lauer-Manenti
Leigh Evans
Adi Carter
Gab Epstein-Casper
Amanda Capobianco
Dana Perry
Luke Simon
Stephanie Sandleben*
Summer Quashie*
and me :)

The list of bands is coming soon (check here for updates) but so far we've got a lil' bit of country, blues, funk, pop, folk, etc. in the mix....so basically it's gonna be a mini, cheaper, home grown wanderlust.

Early Early Bird Registration until June 30th.......only $250!!!

That includes your camping spot, all meals, all yoga classes, and music from Friday night till Monday afternoon. That's REALLY CHEAP!!!!

Only a limited amount of these spots are available so jump on it soon. Otherwise, here's the breakdown:

Private Cabin (one single bed): add $120 ($40 per night)

B&B shared room: add $180 ($60 per night)
B&B private room: add $225 ($75 per night)

Cabins are modest and simple, just a bed (no electricity). Bring your own linens and pillow or buy a packet when you get there for $20.

B&B rooms are located down the mountain on the main Abode campus and are very nice and cozy :) Linens/towels are included.

The Abode Mountain Camp is located only a 2.5 hour drive from NYC in the Berkshire Mountains in New Lebanon, NY. Or take the Amtrak train to Albany (45 min taxi to the Abode) or Metro North to Wassaic (an hour and 15 min taxi to the Abode). There will be a message board to help those looking to coordinate carpooling and taxi-pooling with others.

For more info on the Abode and the accommodations (with pictures) visit
http://www.abode-of-the-message.org/calendar/content/conference-center

What else can I say?!

Ah yes. To register, send me an email (yogahoedown@gmail.com).

Yoga for Musicians and Artists presents:

Music = Vibrations = Yoga

July 23-25 at Heartland (upstate NY)
with FonLin, Stevie, Bizza, Monika, and Molly
A Yoga Retreat By Music People

Yoga and music are both ways of tapping into our inner potential,
to expand beyond the limitations of our bodies. We'll use the rhythms and vibrations of music and our own movements to connect to ourselves and each other.
On the practical side, yoga is also a useful tool for stretching out after
riding in a tour van, alleviating that hang over, and dealing with internal band conflict!

Plus, it's real pretty and quiet up there.

Tonight::Guest Teacher Kevin Courtney::Northside Pics

This past weekend YfMA and Northside Music Festival brought yoga to the dirtiest, grittiest rock club they could find (sorry, Death by Audio!).
Amidst the stage lights, cigarette butts, and stale beer smell (sounds real blissful, yeah?), we laid down our mats and had class. And it was awesome.
Punk rock and dancing followed, see pics below.
Thanks to Mindy at Tom Tom Magazine for hosting!
