A men's only retreat

How does yoga can suit the American man, without apology for, or the pressure to be, what

we are and what we are not? In order to change the American social, personal, and political landscape, we must re-imagine the American male. This weekend will definitely include yoga, and might also include shooting guns, lumbering, sleeping outside, knot tying, cooking together, crying, feeling, chanting, hugging, talking it out, and serious inversions. We will offer ancient and modern tools to move beyond the societal constraints toward enhancement and freedom.

We will examine our strengths, vulnerability, (in)flexibility, in order to create and foster a yoga practice that allows us to be who we are without pressure or apology. We will come together as men to delve into our own selves with honesty, humility, and bravery, to re-imagine what it means to be an American male and move beyond societal expectations.

Society prescribes what it is to be a man, oftentimes confounding what we permit ourselves to become. We feel this in our bodies and sense this in our thoughts. At times, our spirits are conscious of a tension. Let this be a weekend of deeply exploring who we are as men, and practicing deeply what kind of men we want to be. Let freedom be our guideline. Let us support our brothers in their journeys without expectations. No rules, aside from the urgency to be present, ought to shape us. Through the practice of yoga, we will stretch beyond our perceived limitations and be creative with our masculinity.

Yoga and Yarn focuses on yoga practices that are specific for women's needs. Meals will also be geared toward women's nutrition.

Yoga with Hannah Harpole (who has just come back from India, and has lots of stories to share!). We will explore yoga poses that are specific for women, as well as techniques for regulating one's menstrual cycle with the moon. We will do moon salutations, learn when to do inversions and backbends, explore pranayama and mudras that help balance the hormones.

Yarn with Christine Brandt. Knitters and crocheters of all levels are welcome on this ladies only retreat! Beginners will learn the basics of knitting and crocheting. From casting on, knit, purl, binding off, all the way to finishing your own piece for the winter. More advanced knitters will learn to read patterns or work on their own individual pieces.

FonLin will cook meals that based on Ayurvedic and Chinese traditions that focus on ladie's needs.

Hannah Harpole isinterested in how the physical act of creating space between the joints, muscle, tendons, ligaments, cells, blood of our bodies results in space within our thinking. She has also had extensive experience in women's health. Her classes are physical rigorous, and she is equally dedicated to the Ashtanga and B.K.S Iyengar lineage. Hannah recently traveled in India where she was honored to study in Mysore with Sharat, Rishikesh with Usha, and Dharamkot at the Himalayan Iyengar Institute. She was also was taught traditional Tibetan Meditation by, Sonam, a Monk of the Dalai Lamas family.Hannah also creates performances, films, and cooks vegetarian food.

FonLin is also a yoga teacher, but on this retreat she is going to cook for you, in an way that will make your body and mind feel amazing, using Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine traditions. Food to make your chi move!

Christine is an avid crochet and knitter. She can pretty much crochet or knit anything. Some advice on buying yarn and needles: For first time knitters, a good place to start is with a thick, chunky yarn, it will be easier to learn on. Find something that you will be excited to work with, that feels good to the touch that's in a color that you like. Get a pair of big needles, size 10 or larger. If yarn stores make you nervous, no worries, needles and yarn will be provided!

Luke Simon Luke has been exploring and enjoying yoga for 10 years. Originally from New Mexico, his love for yoga has taken him to many beautiful places and teachers. In 2006 he completed 200 hours of Hatha Yoga, Pranayama & Meditation training at the Sivananda Ashram in Kerala, India. He also hugged Amma for the first time, and has been deeply inspired by her hearty lifestyle of 'embracing the world'. In 2009 he completed Laughing Lotus' 200-hour Vinyasa training in New York City, where he continues to practice, study and teach.
Luke's class combines alignment and awareness with rhythm to bring back grace to the body and mind. Equally challenging and relaxing, classes usually include Sanskrit chanting, insight from the Yoga teachings and some good music. He sends great gratitude to all his teachers, including Amma, Walt Whitman and Rumi. Please visit his blog at future-saints.com.
